The Alperin Coaching Program: Precision Coaching for the Next Generation of Physicians
Thanks to the generous support of Dr. Pete Alperin and Lorena Jones Alperin, the UCSF Internal Medicine Residency Program is launching the Alperin Coaching Program, a comprehensive initiative for resident mentorship, coaching, and career development.
Dr. Alperin, a UCSF Internal Medicine Residency alumnus who completed residency in 1997, has had a successful career as a physician-entrepreneur. He joined Doximity early in its history, serving as both an advisor and senior executive in commercial and product leadership roles. “I have always been grateful to UCSF for showing me that there are many paths to having a satisfying and impactful career and giving me the skills to be successful,” he says. “It’s a pleasure for me to be able to give back to our wonderful residency program in this way.”
The Alperin Program will transform mentorship from an informal, variable experience into a structured, data-informed coaching system designed to support every resident. This funding will provide residents with access to a dedicated faculty coach throughout all three years of their training and will support the integration of AI-enhanced coaching tools that synthesize feedback, connect residents with mentors and resources, and support personalized career development planning.
The program will also establish the Alt-PATH Advisory Board, an expanded network of advisors with expertise in health technology, health policy, health economics, and pharmaceutical development. The board will create new opportunities for residents to explore diverse career paths.
Through this investment in mentorship, Dr. Alperin is helping UCSF strengthen resident development, promote career fulfillment, and prepare future physician leaders for an increasingly complex healthcare landscape.
